All images and catalogue records (data on the Record View pages) are in copyright, owned by West Sussex County Council and/or a partner museum. We welcome the downloading or copying of the images or text for educational or private use.

If you wish to reproduce or publish the images on this website, you must contact us. This includes casual use on social media sites such as Facebook etc. We do welcome this use, and no fees are usually payable, but we need to insure a link is made back to this website and a specific credit line is used.

Please note that as well as using the low resolution images on this site free of charge, you can also buy large prints on photo paper or high resolution jpeg or tif files.

Copyright for Private Individuals and Organisations

If you are a private individual publishing an article or book, or you represent a charity, club, society, local authority or other non-commercial organisation, please contact us to discuss ordering high resolution image files. These can be used in exhibitions, books, magazines, publicity material etc. We usually need to charge a fee for the staff time involved in supplying these but we can sometimes waive these. Examples of waived fees might be you supplying us with free copies of a book, or digital copies from your organisation's image collection, or possibly loans of original material.

Commercial Use

We welcome commercial use of our images. Our definition of commercial use is reproduction of any image and/or text by a company, regardless of whether profit is made through the use of our images, or by an individual wishing to sell our images for profit. You must get written (usually e-mailed) permission of either the County Local Studies Librarian or the curator of the partner museum which owns the particular image.

Please visit our Buy images page and email us a commercial use quotation form. We can supply high resolution jpeg or tif files, the former direct to your company, to printers or graphic designers, as required.

Commercial use is restricted to the purpose for which it was granted and further reproduction of the images is prohibited without further documented permission and payment of a further fee.

Disclaimer

We have made every effort to use only images which are either out of copyright or which were donated to the owning institution for use as it chooses. See our Selection Policy for further information.

If we have inadvertently used an image over which you have copyright please let the County Local Studies Librarian know, including evidence of ownership of the original, and we shall remove it from the database.

We have tried to contact any living people identified in photographs for permission to include them in the database. We have, of course, not always been able to identify every person in a photograph. If an image of you has been used, whether you have been named or not, and you would prefer it not to be included, please let the County Local Studies Librarianknow and the photograph will be removed.

Although we have taken great care in compiling the information and selecting the images in the database, we take no responsibility for any difficulties resulting from inaccuracies in the text. Users also access the website at their own risk.
