Short title | St Swithun's Church, East Grinstead, after the fall of the tower |
Full description | Ink and wash drawing by James Lambert showing St Swithun's church, East Grinstead, in 1785 after the tower collapsed and almost completely demolished the church. The tower was constructed in 1684 to replace the former tower destroyed by fire, and collapsed in November 1785 apparently due to bad materials and faulty workmanship. Picture shows remains of two windows, walls, columns with bell and rubble on the ground. The drawing was photographed for a postcard by A. Harding c1910. |
