Short title | South Downs and Wiston House, near Steyning |
Full description | Wiston House, near Steyning is also known as Wiston Place or Wilton Park. View of South Downs and St. Mary's Church on far right. The site of Chanctonbury Ring can be seen on the Downs to the right, prior to tree planting in 1760 by Charles Goring. The house may have been 'stretched' by the artist who copied it from a drawing by John Dunstall senior, who drew his in 1636. The farm in the foreground is Lower Buddington Farm, pulled down in the 1950s. Information for this caption is courtesy of Janet Pennington. Etching original by Wenceslaus Hollar, now at the British Library (PS154970). |
