Full description | Albert Duffield. Portrait of Albert in uniform. Born 1888-1981. One of 6 children. Son of Abram (Abraham) and Annie Duffield. Left Worthing in 1914 to work at the Half Moon Pub in Balcombe, to learn the trade so he could take on his own pub. In 1914 he joined the Army and spent time in Cambridge at the Bull Hotel which had been taken over by the Army. After the war he joined the Civil Service (Crown Agents for the Colonies) and moved to Wimbledon, London. He married Kate (Kitty) Tester in 1920, whom he had met in Balcombe (orphaned daughter of a local farmer living with her aunt in the village). They had one son, Leslie, born 13th Sept 1921. Albert worked at the Civil Service until retirement when he joined his son in Solihull. Kate died in 1973. Loaned by Mrs E. Davies (nee Duffield), one of Albert's nieces. |
