Short titleSt John's Parish Church, Crawley
Full descriptionSt John's Parish Church, Crawley. The interior of the Parish Church seen here before the addition of the north aisle and rebuilding of the chancel. Note the 15th Century oak roof. On the right there is a memorial plaque to the churchwarden Thomas Smith. Mr Smith was also the local physician and resident of The Tree. Crawley's parish church was founded as a small chantry chapel in 1250 and dedicated to St John the baptist. In the middle of the 15th Century the tower was built and the nave was raised. More rebuilding and enlarging of the chancel then occured in the 1880s (after this photograph was taken) and was brought about by Rev. John Barrett-Lennard. In 1901 a clock was placed on each side of the tower to commemorate the life and reign of Queen Victoria. Compare to RBP5051, RBP5052 and RBP5054. Original photograph and additional information stored in two red albums called Then and Now, Crawley Old and New Town by Roger Bastable, item no. 200472229, ref. no. A26. Roger Bastable Collection.
